Privacy Policy
Last updated July 6, 2026
This policy covers the Narrows mobile app. Looking for the policy that covers narrows.site and our waitlist signup? See our website privacy policy instead.
This Privacy Policy explains how Narrows ("we", "us") collects, uses, and shares information when you use the Narrows mobile application (the "App"). Narrows is a boating and fishing community app for the Simcoe County, Ontario area.
By creating an account or using the App, you agree to this Privacy Policy.
1. Who we are
Narrows is based in Orillia, Ontario, Canada. For any privacy question or request, contact us at support@narrows.site.
2. Information we collect
Account information
- Email address and password (password is stored hashed by our auth provider).
- First and last name.
Profile / onboarding information
- Region, boat ownership, and experience level you provide during onboarding.
- Optional profile photo.
Content you create
- Posts (trips, catches, check-ins), captions, photos and videos you upload.
- Likes and comments.
- Catch pins, fishing spots, and trip records, including location coordinates.
Location information
- With your permission, we collect your device's GPS location to show your position on the map, let you drop catch pins, and record trips.
- If you start a trip and grant "Always" location access, we continue recording your location in the background while the trip is active, so distance and duration are tracked accurately even if you switch apps or lock your phone. Background tracking stops as soon as you end the trip, and a persistent notification stays visible on your device the entire time it is running, so you always know when it's active.
- You can disable location access at any time in your device settings (some features will not work without it).
Photo moderation
- Photos you post are automatically scanned by an image-safety service (see Section 5) to check for nudity or graphic violent content before the post is published. This is automated and does not involve a human reviewing your photo unless it is separately reported.
Usage and device information
- Basic technical data needed to run the App (e.g., app version, device type, error logs).
- A push notification token, if you enable notifications, so we can alert you about activity on your posts (likes, comments).
We do not intentionally collect financial information or government IDs.
3. How we use your information
- To provide and operate the App (accounts, feed, map, weather, trips).
- To display your name and content to other users (see "What's public" below).
- To improve features and fix problems.
- To communicate with you about your account (e.g., email confirmation, password reset).
- To select and display advertising based on the onboarding information you provide (e.g., region, boat ownership, experience). See Section 6.
4. What is public vs. private
- Public to other signed-in users: your first/last name, profile photo, posts, captions, photos, likes, comments, and (where applicable) catch/trip locations you choose to share.
- Private: your email address and password are never shown to other users.
Do not post anything you are not comfortable making visible to the community.
5. How we share information — service providers
We use trusted third parties to run the App. They process data only to provide their service to us:
- Supabase — database, authentication, and file storage (hosts your account and content).
- Resend — sending account emails (e.g., confirmation and password-reset codes).
- Apple Maps — displaying maps.
- Open-Meteo — weather data (we send only marina coordinates, not your personal information).
- Google Cloud Vision — automated scanning of photos you post for nudity or graphic violent content before publishing (see "Photo moderation" above).
- Expo — delivering push notifications to your device.
If you choose to share a post to a third-party app (e.g., Instagram or Snapchat), the shared image is sent directly to that app by your device at your request — we do not control or receive anything back from how that third party handles it; see their own privacy policies.
We may add other weather/radar data providers (such as RainViewer) in the future. We do not sell your personal information.
6. Advertising
We may show advertising in the App. Where we use your onboarding information (such as region or boat ownership) to make ads more relevant, we will disclose this and, where required by law, offer a way to opt out. We do not share your identity (name/email) with advertisers.
7. Location data — specifics
- Location is used for: showing your position, catch pins, suggested spots, and trip tracking.
- For most features, location is collected only while you are actively using the App (foreground).
- If you start a trip and grant "Always" location access, location continues to be collected in the background for the duration of that trip only, so we can accurately total distance and time even if you switch apps or lock your phone. A persistent on-device notification stays visible the whole time background tracking is active, and it stops the moment you end the trip.
- Catch/spot/trip locations you save are stored in our database; you control whether you create them, and you can delete them.
8. Data retention
We keep your information for as long as your account is active. When you delete your account, your profile and associated content are deleted (some data may remain in backups for a limited period, and we may retain limited records where required by law).
9. Your rights
Subject to applicable law (including Canada's PIPEDA), you may:
- Access the personal information we hold about you.
- Correct inaccurate information.
- Delete your account and personal information directly in the App (see Section 10).
- Withdraw consent (e.g., turn off location), understanding some features may stop working.
To make a request, email support@narrows.site.
10. Deleting your account
You can delete your account at any time directly in the App, under Settings → Delete Account. Deletion is immediate and permanent: it removes your account, profile, and content (posts, comments, likes, catch pins, trips) via cascading deletion. If you are unable to access the App, you can also request deletion by emailing support@narrows.site from the email address on your account. (Some data may remain in backups for a limited period, and we may retain limited records where required by law.)
11. Children
The App is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under that age. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact support@narrows.site and we will delete it.
12. Security
We protect your data using industry-standard measures, including Row Level Security on our database (so users can only access data they are permitted to). No system is perfectly secure, but we work to safeguard your information.
13. International processing
Our service providers may process and store data outside your province or country (e.g., in the United States). By using the App you consent to this processing.
14. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy. We will post the new "Last updated" date and, for material changes, notify you in the App or by email.
